WINTERWORKSHOP IN LOFOTEN 2025 Hans Strand and Trym Ivar Bergsmo

14 - 19 JANUARY 2025

© Isa Bacher

There will be 4 days of full day photography among snow covered mountains framed by turquoise ocean and sandy beaches. Both Trym and Hans have many years of experience shooting in this very special landscape and will guide you how to make better and greater photographs.

After each day of shooting there will be image reviews of your work and indoor classes/lectures. Beside talking about compositions and techniques, Hans and Trym will also share their experience from the process of photographing, planing and producing their latest book projects.
Our accommodation is centred in the most beautiful part of Lofoten, with easy access to great locations nearby.

PROGRAMME

We will spend 5 days (5 nights) exploring the wester part of Lofoten. Most of the time we will be out on different locations. The light at this time of year is dramatic and unusual. In combination with the wild and varied landscape, there will be amazing photo opportunities. The weather is not our master, but we take advantage of the variation and look at all the possibilities that arise in the transition between good or bad weather. That's when the most exciting and unexpected pictures come. There will be lectures in camera technique, composition, photo philosophy, theme around landscape photography, etc. in the evenings. We will give feedback on pictures taken during the day (If we are not out to hunt for the night light, or the northern lights). We enjoy photo demonstrations in the field. There will be picture shows - where Hans and Trym talk about how they think when they photograph and what choices they are interested in and what they are looking for. There will be a review of special techniques in Photoshop: what do you do with your photos to bring out your personal expression? There is a lot of photography out there. It will probably be a memorable experience for all of us and most likely you will meet like-minded you will continue to be in touch with after the workshop.

HANS STRAND

Hans Strand, born in 1955 in Marmaverken, Sweden. In 1990, after a nine-year career in mechanical engineering he decided to devote his life to landscape photography. Its a change he never regretted. Hans has always felt himself drawn to the untamed and unmanipulated emotions and expressions that he finds in nature. He often says: ”The wilderness is the mother of all living things. It is always true and never trivial”. Hans work takes him to diverse places worldwide; frompolar deserts to steaming rainforests and expansive deserts. The internationally awarded landscape photography is seldom a portrait of a place, but an expression of forces that create and mold a landscape. His pictures, frozen in a static frame, still tell a story of movement, time and evolution. He has a foremost interest for the landscapes in the far North like Iceland, Greenland Northern Sweden and Lofoten in Norway. In the latest years his photography has also taken a course away from the untouched and wild nature and focused more on people´s influences on ecosystems. Photographs of water pollution and the visual magic of manmade agricultural landscapes have therefore become an important ingredient in his in recent work.
Hans Strand is frequently published in international photo and art magazines and his work has created a worldwide following of photographers who want to learn from him through his workshops. He is well acquainted with Lofoten and the workshop in January 2023 is his 8th in the area. He has won thirteen international awards, including the Hasselblad Master Award in 2008. He has published 10 books, often with themes relating to the environment and peoples relations to nature and landscapes. The latest book ” Beyond Landscape” is focusing on abstract landscape photography.

TRYM IVAR BERGSMO

Born and raised in Vesterålen, he studied photography (BA-degree) for three years in the USA and has worked as a professional photographer for more than 30 years. He has a strong affiliation to the Arctic landscape and has, via commissions and personal projects, photographed in Northern Norway, Svalbard, Sweden, Iceland and Greenland etc.

He has a predilection for landscapes. His personal projects are often linked to renditions of the landscape and its relation to the people who live in this part of the world. This has led to several books, exhibitions at home and abroad and photographical commissions. At present he is working on major documentation projects in Northern Norway, exhibitions and new books.

Bergsmo is arranging workshops with the LANDSCAPE as the main theme. His geographical knowledge and experience on the North is of key importance in the planning and implementation of these workshops, which cover the Arctic part of Norway (three northernmost counties).
